My Coaching Philosophy

I didn't set out to be a coach. I set out to be an actor.

But somewhere in the process of training, working, writing and directing, I discovered that the thing I love most is helping other actors find their way into truth.

Not technique for its own sake. Not the performance of emotion. Truth, which is just another word for being real, in the moment, and in the circumstances.

I coach from the inside out. We start with who you are, not who you think a 'good actor' should be. We work on the skills that make truth possible: presence, listening, imagination, specificity.

And because I write and direct, I can show you what it looks like from the other side of the camera: what a director is actually looking for, what makes a casting director lean forward, what makes a scene work beyond just your performance.

This is not abstract. This is what I do, every week, as a working actor.

"It felt like a really safe and exciting place to learn, gain insight to the Characters and the play, and find their journeys, both mental and physical.

Kat gently coaxed us to talk about our characters in a safe nurturing environment, no right or wrong way to play the situation but so many layers were found.

... to have her as a Drama facilitator is an absolutely special and cathartic experience for all of us."

"Taking my first class with Kathryn was outstanding. Not only to work on my own character and behaviours but also working on the rest of the cast too.

Not long after the class I was then cast in a short film where I was able to apply these techniques.

Also a great class in human behaviour, how to bring yourself into the characters world and find empathy with them, using that to help with reactions on set where natural behaviour no matter the role is a must."

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to book a session?

Not at all. Beginners are always welcome.

What's the difference between 1-2-1 and group?

In a 1-2-1, everything is focused entirely on you. In a group class, you learn from watching others and get feedback in a shared environment. Many actors do both.

Are sessions available online?

Yes. All 1-2-1 sessions are available via Zoom. Selected group classes also run online.

I'm a working professional, is coaching still useful for me?

Absolutely. Some of my most valuable sessions are with working actors who want a fresh perspective or to break a plateau. Having a coach who also directs gives you access to insight you can't get from a peer.
